AMERICA, BABYLON, AND BELSHAZZAR’S FEAST by Jeff Wingo

Belshazzar’s heart felt light with a mixture of excitement and wine as he and one thousand of the lords of his kingdom feasted in the Great Hall of Babylon. For hours the revelry continued, and Belshazzar’s heart was not only flush with wine, but also pride.

Suddenly he rose to his feet and said, “My lords, the servants are setting before you the gold and silver vessels taken by my grandfather, the great king Nebuchadnezzar, from the magnificent Temple of the Jews in Jerusalem.” Belshazzar ordered the vessels filled and wine and said, “Drink, my lords, drink to your fill, lifting high your golden vessels in praise to the gods of the glory of Babylon, the kingdom of all kingdoms! Drink, and sing the praises of our gods of gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and wood, and stone!”

As Belshazzar and his lords were drinking wine from the Temple vessels, and shouting the praises of Enlil, Enki, and Marduk, suddenly, with a blinding flash of burning light, the fingers of a man’s hand materialized and began to write on a wall behind the king. The crowd near the king gasped in horror; as Belshazzar quickly rose from his seat, he turned to look at the wall, and his heart sank with a deep feeling of fear and dread. Consternation gripped his heart as he dropped the golden vessel from which he drank.

The crowded feasting hall abruptly grew quite as the huge fingers carved the plastered wall. “Belshazzar, what is it, what does it mean?” asked one of his concubines.

The king didn’t answer, he couldn’t. He was so struck with fear that words were unable to escape his mind.

Just as suddenly as it appeared the supernatural hand vanished. The Great Hall of Babylon was silent; in those moments time ceased to exist, and nothing broke the silence.

Belshazzar sat down trembling. Without warning he shouted, “what does this mean? Who can tell me? What does this great sign mean?”

Most of you know the rest of the story. It is found in Daniel chapter 5. As the story goes, the prophet Daniel was brought in to interpret the writing. Belshazzar offered to make him the third ruler in the kingdom, if he could interpret the meaning of the message.

The writing etched in the wall said: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin, which is translated:

God hath numbered thy kingdom and finished it. Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and the Persians.

That night king Belshazzar was slain and his kingdom was divided between the Medes and the Persians.

I wonder how long the party will go on for the United States, and all the world? I wonder how long it will go on before we are given over to a spiritual enemy? There is a great and terrible enemy waiting at our gates. We have shut God out of our public institutions such as the schools and universities. We have demanded unlimited freedoms without personal responsibility: and now our Supreme Court has taken upon itself to redefine marriage, an institution held sacred in every society since the beginning of time.

Same-sex marriage is more than an affront to God, He calls it an abomination; and now I find it interesting that our national sins are being exposed on the media each night. As reported in the news, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the nation, has been caught red-handed selling parts and pieces of aborted babies for profit. As if abortion isn’t bad enough, now we find out they are dissecting little unborn children and selling the organs.

The barbarians aren’t at the gates, we have become the barbarians.

The judgment of God takes many forms. One of those forms is a vain imagination and moral darkness. The word for vain in the Greek means, “to be brought to folly, or emptiness in the thoughts. In other words, unable to keep from becoming morally wicked, or idolatrous in the mind. This naturally translates to physical action, leading to all kinds of depravity. Paul addressed this in Romans chapter one.

The wrath of God is revealed against all of our ungodliness: personal and national. How many Christian churches today hold the truth of God in unrighteousness? How many churches that at one time preached the gospel of Christ now capitulate to the culture and water the truth of personal salvation down to a social gospel: which only seeks to heal the social inequities in society? How many Christian churches refuse to teach the truth that biblical marriage is only between one man and one woman: and now they allow same-sex weddings? That is holding the truth in unrighteousness. That is hiding truth of God and submitting to the spirit of the age, which is the spirit of antichrist.

Paul goes on:

Romans 1:20-22:  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

As human beings we have a moral responsibility to God. The Bible informs us that we are held personally responsible for our conduct in this life; and at the end, we will face God, either at the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10), or the Great White Throne at the end of time (for unbelievers–Revelation 20:11-15).

What happens to those who choose to rebuke God, flaunt sin in His face, and reject His Word?

DARKNESS:

Because of their refusal to acknowledge the truth of God their imagination becomes vain, as defined above: this leads to mental and moral depravity, which ends in Darkness. It comes upon those who reject the Divine principles of the Bible and suppress the truth.

Galatians 6:7-8:  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

When we mock the things of God such as marriage, instituted as a union of one man and one woman, and freely allow the murder of the unborn, and the selling of their little bodies after we have killed them, we sow to the wind and will reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7).  Obviously, the consequences are very great.

At that point men are no longer men, they become beasts; once this happens moral depravity sets in and it cannot be stopped. Nothing on Earth can stop what has happened, because men have become like wild beasts. They want their sin so much that they are willing to threaten and retaliate in various ways against those who oppose them (usually through the legal system, which has become corrupt as well). That is why Christians must be silenced with threats and legal actions to deprive them of their homes and businesses.  These actions of wickedness are intended to silence all opposition. Paul goes on:

The truth of God is altered in the minds of men, and God gives them up to something even worse: a reprobate mind.

Romans 1:26:  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.

The end result is a society given over to violence and evil. That was the cause of the Flood of Noah. And, just as Jesus said, “And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man” (Luke 17:26).

Satan is preparing the world to receive the Man of Sin. The Bible describes the Man of Sin as a Beast. He is so evil he is called the Beast From the Abyss. If men want to act like beasts, and want a beast world, then the darkness of judgment is going to give them exactly what they want through the Great Tribulation and the Man of Sin: the ultimate Beast.

Our only hope is Jesus Christ. He can heal those who are broken, and reorient a heart to live in righteousness. He can make the crooked places straight, and provide His light to enlighten the way, dispelling the darkness.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11: Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind (homosexuals),  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Romans 10:13:  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
